What a leak repair involves
A leak repair starts by finding where the water got in, at a flashing joint, a vent or a damaged shingle. TDLR licenses no roofing trade. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, a trade association, says anyone can call themselves a roofer.
What a roof leak repair costs in Texas: estimates, not quotes
We put a leak repair at $105 to $5,600 per leak repair, minor to major. It's a single national range, widened 15 percent up and down and multiplied by 0.81, the ratio of Texas to US roofer pay; no Texas company publishes a leak price we could count.
The national sources disagree widely, which is why the spread is wide. A company's written price decides what you pay.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $105 to $5,600 per leak repair, minor to major | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Texas roofer wage ratio (0.81). Twelve Texas roofing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Texas company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Roofer wage, Texas mean | $22.69 an hour | What Texas roofers earned per hour in May 2025 (BLS); it measures wages and doesn't price a leak repair. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Texas's roofer wage ratio to the US (0.81, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. Twelve Texas roofing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. We have no counted Texas company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.
Patch or new covering after a leak
A leak by itself doesn't settle whether the roof needs replacing. Ask the company to show where the water entered and what the deck looks like there. On a claim, an aging roof may be switched to actual cash value, TDI notes, which lowers what the policy pays.
- The water entered at one flashing, vent or damaged shingle.
- The deck around the entry point is dry and firm.
- The deck is soft or stained across several areas.
- Leaks keep returning in different places after patches.
The insurance clock after a storm leak
TDI's claim page gives the company 15 business days to acknowledge the claim and start its review. It then has 15 business days, after it has what it needs, to say whether it will pay, and it can take 45 days more if it tells you why. After a weather-related catastrophe TDI can add 15 days. Payment is due within five business days of agreeing.
Tarps and temporary fixes
On the coast, TDI treats temporary repairs after a storm as work that needs no windstorm inspection. Dallas needs no permit for temporary measures such as tarps that keep more water out. Both rules stop at the stopgap. The permanent repair is the job a city or TDI may want to see.
The deductible and the estimate
If the leak becomes a claim, the deductible is the money in play. TDI says it's illegal for a contractor to waive it or work it into the bid. Hire someone else if a company offers, TDI advises.
What counts as an emergency with a leak
- Water is dripping from a light fixture or running down a wall.
- The ceiling is bowed with water, or has begun to sag.
- A brown stain that is dry and has not widened since the last rain.
- A drip that only appears in a hard, wind-driven storm.
What to do while you wait for a company
- Report a storm leak to your insurer or agent and write down when you did.
- Ask each company for a written bid showing its name, phone and address.
- Ask for the certificate of insurance, then phone the insurer it names.
Does a leak repair need a permit?
Each city sets its own line. Killeen requires a permit for repairs over 100 square feet, and at any size when the deck or framing is damaged. After a storm, Dallas issues a roofing permit for shingle and deck damage at the counter or online.
Texas has no state roofing license to check, so before any work starts, ask for the certificate of insurance and call the companies listed on it.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to fix a roof leak in Texas?
$105 to $5,600 per leak repair, minor to major is our modeled range, and a quote may differ. The range is wide because the national sources behind it disagree. Read what the written price says it includes.
How long does my insurer have to act on a leak claim?
15 business days to acknowledge and start its review, then 15 more to decide once it has what it needs. Those are TDI's published steps. The company can take 45 days more if it explains why, and TDI can add 15 days after a weather-related catastrophe.
Does a Texas homeowners policy cover a roof leak?
Only if the policy covers the cause, so read the wording or ask the insurer. Some policies pay replacement cost and others actual cash value, TDI says, and a company may switch an aging roof to actual cash value. TDI adds that an insurer won't pay for a new roof just because it's old.
Can a roofer waive my deductible if my roof leaks?
No: TDI says contractors cannot waive it or help you avoid paying it. Under HB 2102's 2019 enacted text, promising to waive it is an offense, and TDI's advice is to hire someone else. Report an offer to the Attorney General's hotline, 800-621-0508.
Is a tarp enough until the repair?
It protects the roof for now, and it is temporary protection. Dallas needs no permit for a tarp, and TDI lists temporary storm repairs among work needing no windstorm inspection. The permanent repair is a separate job.
