What an emergency call is for
An emergency visit stops more water getting in, usually with a tarp or a temporary cover, and leaves the permanent repair for later. TDI lists temporary repairs after a storm among work that needs no windstorm inspection on the coast. Dallas needs no permit for a tarp.
What emergency roof work costs in Texas: estimates, not quotes
Our model puts a tarp or emergency repair at $120 to $655 per job. A single national range is behind it, stretched 15 percent at both ends and multiplied by 0.81, the Texas roofer wage ratio. No Texas company publishes an emergency price we could count.
After-hours call-outs aren't priced separately here. The figure is a model and never a quote.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $120 to $655 per job | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Texas roofer wage ratio (0.81). Twelve Texas roofing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Texas company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Roofer wage, Texas mean | $22.69 an hour | BLS May 2025 hourly pay for roofers in Texas; wages and not call-out prices. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Texas's roofer wage ratio to the US (0.81, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. Twelve Texas roofing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. We have no counted Texas company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. Warning signs TDI lists
TDI's contracting scam page names four signs. One is a contractor who wants your signature before giving an estimate. Another is a contract with blank sections, which TDI says not to sign. An offer to waive the deductible or work it into the bid is illegal, and a large or full down payment is the fourth. TDI's Help Line is 800-252-3439.
The deductible is yours to pay
A seller who pays, absorbs or declines to collect your deductible commits a Class B misdemeanor under the 2019 enacted text of HB 2102 (later amendments may have changed it). TDI puts the penalty at up to a $2,000 fine and up to six months in jail.
The insurer's first deadline
TDI's claim steps give the company 15 business days to acknowledge a claim and start its review. After a weather-related catastrophe, TDI can extend that by 15 days.
How to tell a true roof emergency
- Water is running down a wall or through the ceiling at this moment.
- A fallen limb has punched through, or wind has peeled back the covering.
- A dry stain that has stopped growing.
- A written estimate for next month that you are still comparing.
Answer these before anyone climbs a ladder, yourself included.
- Is water coming inside right now?
- Is a tree or a pile of debris sitting on the roof?
- Are shingles missing since the last storm?
- Is a ceiling sagging, or is a stain spreading?
- Has a claim been filed, and is there a deadline on it?
If the first or second is a yes, send the form with Emergency roof repair picked, and get anything valuable out from under the leak. A yes to the fifth shows you the insurance claim guide before the form.
What to settle before anyone climbs up
- Get the estimate, with the company's name, phone and address, before you sign.
- Read every blank line in the contract, and refuse one that has any.
- Pay by check or credit card, and keep the receipt for your insurer.
Do temporary roof repairs need a permit?
In Dallas the tarp needs no permit, and the permanent repair does. For shingle and deck damage Dallas issues a roofing permit over the counter or online, and damage to joists or rafters needs a building permit from the Oak Cliff Municipal Center or online.
Texas has no state roofing license to check, so before any work starts, ask for the certificate of insurance and call the companies listed on it.
Questions people ask
Can a roofer ask for payment up front in Texas?
After a declared disaster, not if it comes from outside your area. TDI says that when a disaster is declared it is against the law for contractors from outside your area to ask for payment before they start work. A large or full down payment is also one of its warning signs.
How much does emergency roof repair cost in Texas?
We estimate $120 to $655 per job for emergency work, and that is not a quote. It's one national range adjusted for Texas roofer pay, with no Texas company emergency price in it.
Do I have to pay my deductible if a roofer offers to cover it?
Yes. TDI says a contractor can't waive it, and a promise to cover it is an offense. HB 2102's 2019 enacted text makes that a Class B misdemeanor. Your insurer can ask for proof that you paid before it pays the full claim.
Does a tarp need a permit in Texas?
Dallas says no, and TDI treats temporary storm repairs as needing no windstorm inspection. Other cities set their own rules for the permanent repair that follows.
Do I need a state license to hire an emergency roofer in Texas?
No. Texas has no state roofing license, so get the certificate of insurance and phone the companies on it. That's TDI's advice, along with the bond certification. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas says the state doesn't require roofers to carry insurance.
