Who cuts in or reseals a skylight
CSLB defines C-39 work as installing products and repairing surfaces that seal, waterproof and weatherproof structures. Ask the company who flashes around the skylight and who comes back if it leaks. Then find its license on CSLB's lookup.
What a skylight costs in California
Installing a skylight is estimated at $1,575 to $5,600 each, installed, and the table adds a row for replacing an existing one. The band is one national range, widened 15 percent each side and multiplied by California's roofer wage ratio of 1.16.
The model adds no permit fee, since some cities want a permit for a skylight and others may not. It is a model and not a quote.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $1,575 to $5,600 each, installed | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the California roofer wage ratio (1.16). Eight California roofing companies publish a whole-roof range for asphalt-shingle replacement on their own websites (cost-guide pages, not price lists); the roof replacement range is the middle half of what they print. Other company figures (repair starting prices, per-square-foot and tile ranges) are not matched to a job here, so the other ranges rest on the national estimate. Basis: no state company sample (no counted California company price for this job), national estimate only. |

Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by California's roofer wage ratio to the US (1.16, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. Other company figures (repair starting prices, per-square-foot and tile ranges) are not matched to a job here, so the other ranges rest on the national estimate. We have no counted California company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.
Resealing, or replacing the skylight
A leak at the frame can be a repair, and a cracked unit is a replacement. Ask the company to say which it found and to photograph it.
- The leak is at the flashing or seal.
- The unit itself is sound.
- The glass or frame is cracked.
- The company is replacing the roof around it.
Older houses and EPA's lead-safe rule
EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires anyone paid to do work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 to be EPA lead-safe certified and to use trained workers. The agency lists the states that run their own program, and California isn't one of them. Find out whether the shaft is painted. If it is, ask the company how it will handle the paint.
Contract limits on a skylight job
The contract must be in writing with the price in dollars and cents, and the downpayment is capped at $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is less (B&P 7159.5). You can cancel until midnight of the third business day after you receive a signed copy that carries the Three-Day Right to Cancel notice.
A skylight problem that is urgent
- Water is dripping from the skylight frame into the room now.
- The glass or dome has cracked or come loose.
- Condensation on the glass with no water at the frame.
- A skylight you are planning for next season.
Before anyone opens the roof
- Note whether the water appears at the frame, the glass or the shaft.
- Ask the company about the home's age and any lead-safe steps.
- Have the company's license number ready for CSLB's lookup.
Permits for skylight work
Our model adds no permit fee because some cities want a permit for a skylight, which cuts the roof structure. Health and Safety Code 17958 lets each city or county amend the state standards, so ask the building department whether yours does.
Before any work starts, ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board.
Questions people ask
What does skylight installation cost in California?
A replacement of an existing unit is priced separately in the table. No California company price for skylights is in our count.
Does my older house trigger lead rules for skylight work?
EPA's RRP rule requires a lead-safe certified company with trained workers. California isn't on EPA's list of states that run their own program.
Is there a tax credit for a skylight in California?
It covered property placed in service before December 31, 2025. For a California rebate, ask your utility; we can't confirm a state roofing program.
Can I cancel a skylight contract?
The window is five business days for a senior citizen, and the contractor has to return payments within 10 days of your notice.
