Gutters and downspouts in Michigan: licensing, ice dams and permits

Short answer

Gutter installation in Michigan is licensed work: the state's residential maintenance and alteration license lists gutters among its trades, and a job of $600 or more needs it. DIFS advises keeping gutters clean to prevent ice damming, while ENERGY STAR ties ice dams to an under-sealed attic, so a gutter job answers only part of the winter problem. Whether your city wants a permit is a local answer.

What a gutter installation includes

A gutter installer measures the eave, hangs the gutter on the fascia with a pitch toward the outlets, fits the downspouts and sends the water out onto the ground away from the house. If old gutters come off, the roof edge underneath gets a look at the same time, since the fascia and the roof edge are where the gutter attaches. Ask what the price includes: removal of the old run, new hangers, downspout extensions and cleanup.

What gutter work costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes

Our estimate for new gutters on a Michigan house is $2,000 to $6,175 per average home, installed, or $10 to $30 per linear foot, installed. It is a model, not a quote: one published national range, adjusted with the roofer wage ratio because gutter installers are not a separate line in the wage data we use. Length and material move it. No Michigan roofing company we looked at published a price we could count, so none is shown.

The roofer wage below is the nearest sourced line, and it says nothing by itself about what gutters cost.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Michigan's roofer median wage ratio to the US (1.07, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine). The wage and permit rows in the table are what roofing workers are paid and what a city's own schedule charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and we found no Michigan roofing company that publishes a price we could count. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

Repair, clean or replace gutters

We give no age at which to replace. DIFS advises clean gutters against ice damming, so cleaning belongs in the comparison. Replacement makes sense when you are already redoing the roof edge.

Usually a repair
  • One section has pulled away or a joint leaks and the rest carries water to the outlet.
Usually a replacement
  • Most of the run sags or leaks.
  • The roof edge is being replaced and the gutters must come off anyway.

Gutters, ice dams and winter damage in Michigan

DIFS's winter-storm page says standard homeowners policies cover a wide range of winter-related disasters, ice dams and leaky roofs among them, and advises keeping gutters clean to prevent ice damming. Coverage still depends on cause and your policy wording.

ENERGY STAR approaches ice dams from the attic: it lists them as a symptom of an under-sealed attic and says air sealing combined with attic insulation can help alleviate their formation. A gutter job and an attic job work on different parts of the same problem. At the eave itself, Michigan's table calls for an ice barrier running from the eave edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, from the base 2015 model code text with no Michigan amendment found; the ice dam guide has the detail.

Who may install gutters in Michigan

The statute names 'siding and gutters' as a craft of the residential maintenance and alteration license, and LARA's list of trades includes gutters. Any job of $600 or more needs the license, unless you are the owner working on your own home. An unlicensed contractor risks a civil fine of $5,000 to $25,000 and cannot sue for payment or place a lien, and a contractor has no lien at all without a written contract that states the license number. Ask for it and check LARA.

How long gutters last: a trade-body chart, with its limits

No government table gives gutter life. InterNACHI, a home inspectors' trade association, prints 20 to 40 or more years for aluminum gutters and downspouts, 20 for galvanized steel, 25 or more for vinyl and 50 or more for copper. We have not confirmed that chart on its own page, the figures are national rather than Michigan-adjusted, and we treat them as a rough comparison between materials and not a schedule.

Gutters when the roof is replaced

When a roof is replaced, the 2015 code says existing flashings, edgings and outlets that are part of the assembly must be replaced where rusted, damaged or deteriorated (R908.5). Ask whether taking the gutters off and putting them back is priced into the roofing contract. Dearborn's Home Rehabilitation Program, for low and moderate-income owner-occupants, lists gutters and downspouts among eligible repairs; see Dearborn.

When a gutter problem is an emergency

Call right away
  • Water is running into the house along an exterior wall or through the ceiling at the eave.
  • A gutter or downspout has pulled loose and hangs over a door or walkway. Keep people away.
  • A thaw is sending meltwater inside along the roof edge.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A drip at a joint in dry weather.
  • A downspout that needs an extension.
  • Leaves in the run in a dry month.

What to look at before anyone climbs

  1. During a steady rain, watch from a window or the ground and note where water spills over or drips behind the gutter.
  2. Look at the ground under each downspout: the water should leave toward the yard, not sit at the foundation.
  3. Check exterior-wall ceilings and the attic eaves for stains. Photograph with a date.
  4. Leave ladder work at the eave to a company. OSHA calls falls the leading cause of death in construction.

Do gutters need a permit in Michigan

The state's permit rule, R105.2, does not name gutters among its exemptions on the list as published, and enforcement is local. Warren's list of permits required shows 'Siding, Gutters & Trim', without plans, and warns that work without a permit may bring fines up to $1,000. Taylor lists siding, trim and gutters as permit work, and Dearborn Heights puts them on its permit application. Grand Rapids and Sterling Heights pages say nothing about gutters. Ask your building department.

Before any work starts, ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board.

A tool for this job

Repair or replace, and what it costs

Michigan has no rule that settles repair versus replace by age or by percent of roof, so this tool does not give a verdict on that. It sorts what to ask a roofing company for, using the Michigan code on layers, tear-off and ice barrier, and it estimates your roof area in roofing squares. Once you have the area, the page shows our modeled range for a replacement, which is an estimate and not a quote. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing.

Questions people ask

What is the average cost of installing gutters in Michigan?

Our estimate is $2,000 to $6,175 per average home, installed, or $10 to $30 per linear foot, installed. It comes from one published national range adjusted for what Michigan roofers are paid, so use it to judge a written quote, not as one. We found no Michigan company that publishes a gutter price.

Do I need a permit to install gutters in Michigan?

It depends on your city: Michigan's R105.2 does not name gutters among exemptions, and Warren and Taylor list them as permit work. Ask your building department.

Does a gutter installer need a license in Michigan?

Yes for jobs of $600 or more, unless you do your own home. LARA lists gutters among the maintenance and alteration trades. Ask for the license number.

Do clogged gutters cause ice dams?

DIFS advises keeping gutters clean to prevent ice damming, and ENERGY STAR separately links ice dams to an under-sealed attic. We found no source that ranks one cause above the other.

How long do gutters last?

InterNACHI's chart gives 20 to 40 or more years for aluminum, 20 for galvanized steel, 25 or more for vinyl and 50 or more for copper. It is a trade-body chart we have not confirmed on its own page, national and not specific to Michigan.

Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage in Michigan?

DIFS says standard homeowners policies cover a wide range of winter disasters, including ice dams and leaky roofs. Coverage depends on the cause and your policy wording.
